This series was departure from Bev Pettersen's more horse-centered mystery books, but I did enjoy them. Enjoyed the first book of the series better than the second, only because kept you guessing a bit more than the second one. Bev Pettersen is great at drawing in the reader to the story and creating great tension as the story moves along to its resolution. The first one has a building romance between the main character and a childhood 'friend', who might be a suspect in the murder of her sister. The first book's romance storyline is NOT a "clean" romance, but doesn't go into gory detailed sex scenes. The second book doesn't have much of the romance storyline and stays focused on the mystery. The second storyline is a little more straightforward and easier to see where the story is going, suspects etc., but still enjoyable read...although, more gory/brutal subject matter (with murderer's chopping up victims to feed pigs). So, if you are sensitive to that type of content, you might want to skip!I liked the continued involvement of the horses/horse world in the first novel and the inclusion of mounted police task force as a continued involvement of the horses in the second novel. The inclusion of the K-9 training/development is well done (just like she explained the racing life in her horse books), and very enjoyable. Overall, the books are engaging and difficult to put down once you start! Thumbs up. These are The 1st books I've read from author Bev Peterson and they are amazing! The characters are well developed, the mysteries are fast paced, action packed with romance. I loved the dogs and explanation of the different areas of k 9 training. I love that the author included the dogs in pivotal roles in solving the crimes. Outstanding read!
